Breckenridge International Festival of Arts
Laurie Shapiro is part of Breck Create’s signature annual festival—BIFA.
Imagine a space where immersive colorful patterns inexplicably bring feelings of connection. Inspired by the theme of Other Worlds, New York-based artist, Laurie Shapiro will create a site-specific environment that invites you to relish in the joy of color and the alluring swirl of psychedelic motifs. As you enter the artist’s hand-painted tent-like structures, you will be mesmerized by the atmospheric quality of color and light that changes theatrically throughout the day as the sun and the clouds move across the ever-changing Colorado sky.
According to the artist, her work “encompasses the sacred; I am heavily influenced by the natural world and spiritual experiences. As a mixed media artist, I employ a layering technique that combines painting, screen printing, sewing, and sculpture to create installations and individual pieces. My installations are particularly transformative, creating otherworldly spaces that transport viewers into an imaginative world, reminiscent of Moroccan quilts or a psychedelic womb - like stepping into my mind.”
Breck Create will present We Are All Connected to Each Other Through Nature—a large- scale hand-painted tunnel structure—that will glow and captivate both day and night for the duration of BIFA. As one of this year’s BIFA artists-in-residence, Shapiro will also create a new large-scale artwork—a dome-like structure, titled Inner Harmony—that will connect to and expand the tunnel experience resulting in a fully immersive and playful experience for all. The combined tunnel and dome structures will also host some special BIFA inspired programs and activations. In addition, the artist will work closely with community through a series of workshops to create elements that will be added to her BIFA installation over the run of the festival.
