Calder Kamin is an artist, educator, and advocate whose work transforms trash into intricately crafted creatures, inspiring others to rethink waste and creativity. Drawing from nature’s remarkable ability to adapt and reuse, Calder creates art that reimagines discarded materials and challenges viewers to be bold about shaping a sustainable future.
Her creative reuse art projects and public workshops have traveled to prestigious institutions, including The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, The American Museum of Natural History, The Contemporary Austin, and The Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Her 2016 solo exhibition Plastic Planet at Women & Their Work was supported by a Mid-America Arts Alliance Artistic Innovations Grant and featured in the PBS series Arts in Context. She has served as Artist-in-Residence at Breck Create, the Beach Museum of Art, Landmark Apartments, and the DoSeum, where her culminating exhibition earned her a second Mid-America Arts Alliance Artistic Innovations Grant.
From 2020–2023, Calder was a board member of Austin Creative Reuse, a nonprofit diverting community waste to artists, educators, and crafters, and she continues to support creative reuse centers nationwide. Her recent and upcoming exhibitions include Ivester Contemporary, Sherry Leedy Contemporary, The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts. In 2023, she completed her first permanent public art installation for the City of Austin at Mary Moore Searight Park and was featured in the PBS series Craft in America: PLAY.
In 2024, Calder will be a resident artist at Bryn Du Mansion, The Wassaic Project, Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Aquarium Gallery, and Camp Stomping Ground. She holds a BFA in Ceramics and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute.
