Discover the mesmerizing, centuries-old Japanese art of Nerikomi (練り込み)—a beautiful ceramic technique that uses colored clays to create striking geometric patterns, delicate swirls, and marbled designs. In this specialty workshop you’ll step away from traditional surface glazing and learn how to build vibrant, intricate patterns directly into the clay body itself.

You will learn how to stain clay with ceramic pigments, laminate and layer different colored slabs, and slice through them to reveal stunning, hidden patterns. Using these custom-patterned slices, you will handbuild a set of unique coasters, ornaments, a mug or a catch-all bowl. The result is a gorgeous, graphic piece where the pattern runs entirely through the clay from front to back.

No prior ceramic experience is required, though if youre looking to expand your  toolkit, you will find this process incredibly inspiring! Please note: Colored Clay will ONLY be available during this class and not for general sale.                                                                       

What to know before registering

Ceramics is a multi step process that takes many weeks for a completed glazed project. Kiln firings occur when there is enough work to fill the kiln. For ceramic glazing instructions and techniques, please consider taking the Ceramics Glazing Class to complete your project.

The cost of the class includes materials and use of studio equipment and tools.
