Winter Planning Guide: How to Plan Your Activities in Breckenridge
Key Takeaways
Plan a Breckenridge winter around the ski day. Book the things that fill up first, then use rest days, storm days, and evenings for everything else.
Family sessions during holiday weeks and spring break, and couples’ evening workshops, tend to fill up first. Book those before anything else.
Most winter workshops take place in heated studio spaces at the Breck Create Arts District campus.
Winter’s big community dates cluster in early December, mid-December, and late January. Last winter that meant Handmade Holiday, Ullr Fest, and the International Snow Sculpture Championships.
Did you know that there’s an entire other half to Breck besides the snow and skiing? Most people come to our area for the slopes, but our community thrives with great food, people to meet, places to explore, and creativity waiting to be discovered.
When prepping for a day in Breck, everyone books lift tickets and dinner reservations. But hardly anyone books the rest day – and it’s there that the fun really starts.
To help you out, we thought we’d walk you through how we’d plan a Breckenridge winter around the ski day: what to book first, how to fill the gaps, and where we fit in.
Start With the Days You Won’t Ski
Every ski trip has a day or two (or more) where you won’t be on the slopes. Whether it’s the weather or just rest, you’ll probably have an afternoon or two when your calendar is freed up.
Start there. Whether it’s shopping or dining, or taking a class at Breck Create, these days might just be the most memorable!
Most of our winter workshops run in heated studio spaces at the Arts District campus, which offers a great way to warm up when you’re not out on the snow. And we make it easy to get involved, no matter your skill level or creative comfort!
Here are just a few of the great places you can start:
Ceramic Open Studio. You can drop in and work on clay without committing to a series! It’s a great way to try your hand at something new.
First Time Throws: Spin + Smash. These are single-session ceramics classes, so there’s no multi-week firing to wait on.
Guided painting. Join us for a relaxed, creative evening where you can paint your own piece or collaborate on one.
3D Pen Art. Ages 17 and up, with materials included.
There’s a lot more to choose from than you may have expected! And if you’re new to the creative arts, then you might want to check out our beginner’s guide to choosing the right art class.
That one sorts out our most popular classes by how much time you have, and gives you a bit more information on what to expect for each.
And if you want even more not-so-great-weather ideas around town, see our rainy-day (and snowy-day) guide.
Match Your Breck Activity to the Day
What kind of day is it? What to book A stormy day or rest day Ceramic Open Studio, Spin + Smash, a stained glass series After-lift hour 3D Pen Art, a guided painting session An evening out A Riverwalk Center performance, or a couples’ painting evening A family day Youth and family classes, Toddler Art + Play A day for group celebrations A private group workshop (confirm availability with us)
We know that everyone has their own type of day, so check out our full guide to winter workshops and creative art classes, which goes deeper on each of the options you can pick from.
Book These First!
This town is busy at all seasons, and many of the best things to do in winter in Breck will sell out faster than others. If you’re planning ahead, here’s what we’d lock in before anything else:
Family workshops in holiday weeks and spring break. Popular family sessions fill up, and those weeks go first.
Couples’ evening sessions. The painting evenings are a favorite, and they tend to fill up too.
Glassblowing at the Hot Shop. Need we say more? As you can imagine, glassblowing is fun to watch and take part in, so you’ll want to book this one well ahead of time.
Private group workshops. Private availability is confirmed directly with our team, so reach out and ask early!
Planning a gift while you’re at it? Gift certificates start at $20, work for any class or performance, and are good for one year from purchase.
A Breckenridge Winter, Month by Month
Here’s the rhythm we’d plan around. If you see any dates marked “last winter”, those are from the 2025-26 season. Calendars are always updating and changing, and our website has the latest 2026-27 versions as they’re set.
November: the warm-up
This is the month that Breck really comes to life for the snow season. Breckenridge Ski Resort is scheduled to open Nov 6, weather permitting. And we get just as busy as the slopes!
On our calendar, you’ll find Japanese Colored Clay Marbling: Nerikomi on Nov 1, Travel Mugs: Beginner Clay Hand Building on Nov 12, and Creative Conversations on Nov 25.
A big hit is our Ullr Fest shot-ski workshops, which start Oct 22, with more sessions on the calendar.
December: the kickoff
Last winter, the first weekend of December packed in our Arts District Winter Weekend, with a Campus Crawl on Dec 5 and Handmade Holiday on Dec 6, right alongside the Lighting of Breckenridge.
Ullr Fest is another can’t-miss event, and one of our most popular attractions. Plus, Riverwalk Center performances begin around now, and holiday-week family workshops are the ones to book early.
January and February: snow and sculpture
January and February bring the ice – literally. The International Snow Sculpture Championships ran Jan 24 to Feb 3 last winter, with sculpting week followed by viewing week and a nightly illumination.
March: spring break
Spring break is when family sessions fill up fast. And as the temps start to warm up, the outdoors also starts to get busy. Riverwalk Center performances run through the month, and last year’s Expressive Drawing classes met on Thursday evenings in March and April.
For more on the full winter event calendar, see our winter events guide. Ullr Fest and the Lighting of Breckenridge are town-wide events. We host the Ullr shot-ski workshops and our own Handmade Holiday market.
