Rainy-Day (and Snowy-Day) Things to Do in Breckenridge
Spring Break in Breckenridge gives you plenty of things to do and see. But what happens when it rains or snows?
The weather in Breck is notoriously unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean it has to dictate your plans.
Creative activities and exploration abound, whether you want to try your hand at glassblowing at the Hot Shot or get inspired at one of the many art studios and exhibitions.
Are you headed to the area soon? Here’s your complete guide to the best indoor days Breckenridge has to offer — anchored in the Arts District and radiating out to everything else in town and across Summit County.
Check out upcoming events and activities at Breck Create online!
Start Here: The Arts District Campus
If the weather isn’t cooperating with your outdoor Breckenridge activities, make sure to stop by the Arts District campus!
The campus is a walkable cluster of renovated historic buildings just off Main Street, open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (until 7 pm on Tuesdays).
Each part of the campus is home to a different creative discipline:
Throw some clay in the Ceramics Studio
Watch experts shape molten glass (and try yourself!) in the Hot Shop
Weave a tapestry in the Randall Barn
Let your kids build cardboard worlds at the Quandary Antiques Cabin
The Fuqua Livery Stable houses the Precious Plastics studio and the Remakers’ Learning Lab. The Old Masonic Hall runs gallery exhibitions year-round, and there’s even a theater on campus!
Breck Create is closed on Mondays — keep that in mind when you’re planning your week. Every other day, the campus is ready for you.
Classes to Enjoy – No Matter the Weather
Breck Create runs hands-on workshops year-round — most run $15–$75 per person, and Breck Create members receive 25% off every class.
Not sure which one’s best for your rainy day? Here are a few ideas!
When You Want Cozy and Low-Key
Want to get creative and cozy? Take in a Bob Ross-style painting session on Wednesdays at the Randall Barn. You can practice your hand at guided mountain-landscape painting with all supplies included. Or you can try your hand at some Expressive Drawing (Thursdays) for a more personal focus on the artistic process.
More a fan of knitting? Join the Crafters’ Circle for knitting and crochet!
When You Want to Get Your Hands Messy
Sometimes you want to get a bit messy. Luckily, the Ceramics Studio is the most flexible on Breck Create’s calendar. Ceramic Open Studio occurs multiple times weekly as a drop-in, unstructured session where you simply come in and work.
For a more guided intro, First Time Throws: Spin + Smash teaches wheel-throwing and then smashing a pot (yes – it’s satisfying as it sounds!)
One of the more philosophically interesting workshops on the calendar is Kintsugi: Golden Mending at the Ceramics Studio. This is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, turning damage into something more beautiful than the original.
When You Want Drama and Heat
The Hot Shop is the Arts District’s place to be on a cold, grey day. A top event on the calendar is beginner Glassblowing. Enjoy learning the art while watching experts at work. Spots go fast, so you’ll want to book ahead.
Another event to add to your calendar is the Mountain Suncatcher Workshop: Intro to Stained Glass. This event is running as a two-evening series on Friday and Saturday nights, where attendees can shape and solder a stained-glass piece to take home!
Rainy Day Activities Beyond the Arts District
Country Boy Mine (Underground Gold Mining)
A short drive from downtown, the Country Boy Mine is Breckenridge’s top destination – whether the weather is good or bad!
On a Country Boy Mine tour, you’ll delve 1,000 feet underground into the original 1887 mine workings. You’ll tour the tunnels and even pan for gold in Eureka Creek.
Best of all? Weather doesn’t matter! Tours run Wednesday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm. Dress in warm layers — it can get a bit cold underground!
The Eclipse Theater (Breck Film)
Breckenridge is home to one of the area’s best places for film: The Eclipse Theater. This cinema is a community-run nonprofit theater that operates Wednesday through Sunday.
You can catch some of the top films while enjoying beer and wine on tap. Add in fresh popcorn, indie film events, and even the yearly Breck Film Festival, and you’ve got plenty to do!
Check breckfilm.org for the current schedule and showings.
Breckenridge Heritage Alliance Museums (Free)
There are three free, walkable museums that operate right in town through the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance:
The Edwin Carter Discovery Center tells the story of a 19th-century naturalist with interactive exhibits and a hands-on kids’ room.
The Barney Ford Victorian House Museum documents the remarkable life of an escaped enslaved man who became a Breckenridge entrepreneur and civil rights leader.
The Welcome Center Museum is a good first stop if you’re new to town and want context before you explore.
Each of these is free and walkable – and each is well worth your time on a slow indoor day.
Stephen C. West Ice Arena
Don’t mind the cold? You can enjoy year-round indoor ice skating at the South Breckenridge rink at Stephen C. West Ice Arena — Summit County’s only covered rink!
Public skating with skate rentals available. Plus, it’s located right next to the Trollstigen Trailhead, and it’s easy to combine with a quick covered walk to see Isak Heartstone, the Breckenridge Troll, on days when the weather isn’t completely prohibitive.
Change Your Gray Day Mindset
Here’s the thing: there’s no such thing as a “bad weather day” in Breckenridge! It’s all about a change in mindset, where you look for creative solutions no matter the forecast.
Breck Create is your home for all things creative, and there’s always something new to explore and experience on the calendar.
Start your day by checking out the events list online and make sure to book early for anything that requires a reservation. Then let the weather do whatever it wants – you’ve got a date with creativity on the horizon.
