Irrational Indigenous Insights: Exhibition Reception + Artist Talk
Join us for the opening of Anna Tsouhlarakis: Irrational Indigenous Insights, an exhibition that reconsiders and redefines what Native art is and can be. Grounded in themes of strength, resilience, humor, and determination, Tsouhlarakis’ work challenges perceptions and expectations that confine Native American art, expanding the boundaries of aesthetic and conceptual understanding. Through video, performance, sculpture, photography, and installation, she reclaims and rewrites Native definitions of making, centering Native voices in original and restorative ways.
“Exquisitely minimalist and monochromatic in form and presentation, Tsouhlarakis’ work is direct and arresting. It is also accessible and inviting—it just pulls you in and makes you want to know more,” explains exhibition curator, Jill Desmond. Comprised primarily of video, sculpture, and large-scale collage, the exhibition explores the use of humor and symbolism to spotlight the experiences and resilience of Native American women. While not Tsouhlarakis’ initial intent, the voices, perspectives, and strength of Native women emerged as a central theme in her work.
The evening will feature an artist talk and an opportunity to experience the exhibition, which confirms new ways of elevating the stories and struggles of Native American communities.
Stay for a continuation of the evening’s events—details to be announced.
