SPARK: Daan Roosegaarde
Inspired by fireflies, stars, and the desire to reinvent traditional fireworks, SPARK is a poetic display of thousands of biodegradable light sparks gracefully floating through the air. SPARK reimagines traditional celebrations by replacing polluting fireworks with a sustainable alternative. Using design and technology, it features thousands of biodegradable light sparks, silently carried by the wind to inspire reflection and wonder.
SPARK invites people to connect with nature and each other. Soaring to a height of about 160 feet, locals and visitors alike will be immersed and enveloped in a magical cloud of floating sparks. Performances last for several hours, thus allowing people to slow down, linger, stretch out on blankets and pillows and be fully engaged in this sensational experience.
Please Note: The timing of the show is subject to change, SPARK requires full darkness for the best experience.

Breck Create, in partnership with the Town of Breckenridge, is delighted to host this US premiere of SPARK as part of the 2025 Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA). The theme of this presentation aligns beautifully with both Breck Create’s and the Town’s sustainability goals and values.
As part of the planning, and to make this presentation successful, the area surrounding the performance will be declared a dark sky zone, which in turn supports the Town’s goal to becoming a certified International Dark Sky Community.
About The Artist

As a social design lab, Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team connect people and technology in installations that enhance daily life in urban environments and spark the imagination. Clean air, clean water, clean energy, and clean space are their new values, and light is their language.
Internationally acclaimed works include SPARK (biodegradable fireworks), Van Gogh Path (a glowing bicycle path), Waterlicht (a virtual flood showcasing the power of water), the Smog Free Project (the world’s first smog vacuum cleaner turning pollution into jewelry), Smart Highway (roads that glow at night), the world’s first Urban Sun (cleaning public spaces of viruses), Seeing Stars (switching off city lights to reveal the night sky), and the world’s largest Firefly Garden in Bali.
Roosegaarde’s mantra, Schoonheid, is a Dutch word with two meanings: “beauty,” as in creativity, and “clean,” as in clean air and clean energy. For Roosegaarde, these should be fundamental in daily life.
He studied Fine Arts and earned a master’s in architecture from The Berlage Institute in Rotterdam before founding Studio Roosegaarde in 2007. His numerous accolades include the London Design Innovation Medal, INDEX Design Award, and Dutch Design Awards. His work has been exhibited at the Design Museum London, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Tate Modern.
A Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, a professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, and a member of NASA’s Innovation team, Roosegaarde has been recognized by Forbes and WIRED as a creative changemaker and frequently lectures worldwide, including at TED. Phaidon has published a monograph of his work.
Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde merges art and technology to create breathtaking, sustainable installations that inspire wonder and reflection. Known for projects like Waterlicht and the Smog Tower, Roosegaarde transforms public spaces with light, movement, and environmental awareness. At BIFA, he presents SPARK, a mesmerizing display of biodegradable light sparks floating in the air, offering a sustainable alternative to fireworks and reimagining the way we celebrate together.
